29 Dead in Colombia Mudslides

Colombian authorities say 29 people have been killed following recent mudslides that buried some areas in southwestern Colombia.

But officials said Monday that while several people remain unaccounted for, 19 others have turned up alive. The survivors were from the village of Bendiciones, which had been buried in the mudslides.

The village is in Colombia's Valle del Cauca province, which has been severely affected by the disaster. Triggered by heavy rains, the mudslides also blocked part of the Cali - Buenaventura highway.

Last Friday, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe traveled to the disaster area to meet with relief workers and assess the situation.

Colombia is in its rainy season, which began in March and will continue through June. The severe weather has left thousands homeless so far this season.
