Great Lakes Ministers Urge UN, AU to Penalize Rebels

Foreign ministers from Africa's Great Lakes region have called on the United Nations and African Union to impose sanctions on rebels destabilizing the area.

The ministers from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda called for a travel ban and assets freeze on rebel leaders.

They said at the end of a two-day meeting in Bujumbura that their governments are committed to disarming thousands of rebels from Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda who have taken shelter in the mostly lawless eastern part of Congo.

The rebel groups mentioned include the Lord's Resistance Army, known for targeting civilians in northern Uganda, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda and the last active rebel group in Burundi, the Forces for National Liberation.
