World Cup: Germany Defeats Sweden 2-0

update

Host country Germany has defeated Sweden, 2-0, to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup football tournament.

In front of more than 66,000 fans in Munich, Lukas Podolski scored both goals for the Germans in the fourth and 12th minutes. Sweden played most of the match with only 10 men after referee Simon Carlos sent off Teddy Lucic for a second yellow card in the 35th minute.

The Germans face the winner of Saturday's second match between two-time World Cup champion Argentina and Mexico in Leipzig. Argentina won Group-C while Mexico finished second in Group-D.

The two nations have met only once in the World Cup, in 1930, with Argentina winning 6-3. The last time they met on German soil was at last year's FIFA Confederations Cup, where they played to a 1-1 draw.
