England, Portugal Advance to Quarter Finals of World Cup

England and Portugal have advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Germany. Portugal defeated the Netherlands in a contentious 1-0 match and England topped Ecuador by that same 1-0 score.

Portugal took a 1-0 lead against the Dutch in the 23rd minute in Nuremberg. Maniche right-footed the ball into the net from 16 meters after receiving a touch pass from Pauleta.

The Netherlands could not score the equalizer despite having a one man advantage most of the second half. Costinha and Deco were sent off for Portugal while Khalid Boulahrouz of the Netherlands was sent off in the 63rd before being joined on the sidelines by Giovanni Van Bronckhorst in the 95th minute.

The match produced a record-tying 16 yellow cards, while the four red cards issued set the World Cup record of 23 in one tournament before the quarterfinals have even begun.

Portugal faces England Saturday in the quarterfinals, after David Beckham scored the only goal of the match in England's 1-0 second round win over Ecuador in Stuttgart.

Beckham bent a 25-meter free kick into the corner of the net, beating Ecuador's diving goalkeeper in the 60th minute. The star striker is the first Englishman to score in three different World Cups.
