Russian Supreme Court Releases Former Energy Minister Pending Trial

update

Russia's Supreme Court has ordered a former nuclear energy minister released from custody while he awaits trial on fraud charges.

Yevgeny Adamov was released Friday after nearly one year in detention.

The Swiss government arrested Adamov last year at the request of the United States, which accuses him of embezzling $9 million in U.S. funds earmarked for security projects at former Soviet nuclear sites in Russia.

Adamov is also suspected of having embezzled $17 million from the Russian government while he was nuclear energy minister between 1998 and 2001.

Washington and Moscow had sought Adamov's extradition, but the Swiss yielded to Russian demands and returned Adamov to his homeland to face charges there first.
