Annan Says Top Pharmaceutical Companies to Try to Improve Access to HIV/AIDS Treatment

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says nine leading pharmaceutical companies have agreed to work toward improving access to HIV and AIDS treatments.

Mr. Annan and senior U.N. officials met with executives of nine drug makers Monday at U.N. headquarters in New York. He says they agreed to review the prices of HIV medications and diagnostics and to make them more affordable in developing countries.

He said they also pledged to give greater priority to research and development of HIV medicines and diagnostic tools for children.

Pharmaceutical companies who participated in the meeting came from the United States, Britain, South Africa and India.
