Gunmen have killed a protester in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, after firing into a crowd of striking teachers.
The protester was identified as Jose Jimenez, the husband of an Oaxaca teacher. A local newspaper, El Imparcial, reports that two protesters also were wounded in the Thursday shooting. The gunmen have not been identified.
The left-leaning Oaxaca People's Assembly organized the demonstration. Several thousand teachers have been on strike for weeks in Oaxaca demanding better wages and the resignation of state Governor Ulises Ruiz.
Tensions have run high in Oaxaca since police broke up a teachers' protest in June by attacking demonstrators.
Last week, hundreds of women stormed a state-run television station and called for Ruiz's resignation. And in July gunmen fired on a university radio station that sided with the striking teachers.
