China's official Xinhua news agency says police in Beijing have detained one of China's most outspoken human rights lawyers.
Xinhua said Friday that Gao Zhisheng is being held for questioning about suspected involvement in criminal activities.
Media reports say he was detained Tuesday in eastern China's Shandong province.
Gao has represented a number of controversial clients, including labor activists, protesting farmers and members of the banned spiritual group Falun Gong.
Earlier this year, Gao also organized a hunger strike to protest police harassment of political activists.
He was stripped of his license in December. Reports say he has been under increased security surveillance since then.
