Pakistan Authorities Bury Body of Baluch Nationalist Leader

Pakistani authorities have buried a tribal leader whose death during a military operation last week sparked days of violent protests.

Authorities say Baluch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti was buried Friday at a cemetery in his hometown of Dera Bugti. His family says the government refused to turn over Bugti's body and let them arrange the funeral.

Following his death, protesters enforced strikes in several parts of Pakistan and blocked the main highway connecting the provincial capital Quetta to the port city of Karachi in Sindh province. Police detained 700 protesters.

The opposition says the army deliberately targeted Bugti and has demanded an investigation. The army denies the charge.

The government accused Bugti of running a feudal justice system complete with private jails. He led a heavily armed private militia and had been blamed for the deaths of scores of police and soldiers.

Bugti had been fighting for provincial autonomy and more royalties for the region's resources.
