Baseball: Twins, Padres Move Close to First Place


Major League Baseball's surging Minnesota Twins have moved within one game of first place in the American League Central division with a 9-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Minnesota sluggers Torii Hunter and Rondell White hit home runs on consecutive pitches in the eighth inning during Thursday's victory.

Elsewhere in the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 7-4. The Los Angeles Angels used Jose Molina's two-run homer in the fifth inning to defeat the Texas Rangers, 2-1. The Boston Red Sox edged the Baltimore Orioles, 6-5. And, the Kansas City Royals downed the Seattle Mariners, 10-8.

In the National League, the San Diego Padres moved just a half game out of first place in the West division after beating the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' division lead dwindled when they lost to the Chicago Cubs, 6-5.

In the other National League games Thursday, the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1. And, the San Francisco Giants thumped the Colorado Rockies, 5-0.
