Cricket: Vengsakar Named India's Chief National Selector

The Indian cricket board has appointed former captain Dilip Vengsarkar as its chief national selector for the next two years.

Vengsarkar, 50, takes over from former teammate Kiran More whose term ended with the board's annual meeting on Wednesday. More held the position for four years.

More presided over the selection committee during a controversial term that included the sacking of India's most successful captain, Sourav Ganguly, following his clash with new coach Greg Chappell. More and fellow selector Pranav Roy also sparked the suspension of domestic cricketer Abhijit Kale, who they accused of offering a bribe in return for inclusion in a representative team. The incident also led to the introduction of a code of conduct for the selectors.

The other new member of the five-man selection panel that picks the Indian national squad will be former left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju. Bhupendra Singh, Ranjib Biswal and Sanjay Jagdale will continue their jobs as selectors.

Vengsarkar was the first batsman to score three hundreds against England at Lord's in London. He tallied 6,868 runs in 116 tests between 1976 and 1992, including 17 centuries. He runs a premier cricket academy in Mumbai (also known as Bombay).

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has been appointed as chairman of the National Cricket Academy Board. He takes over from batting great Sunil Gavaskar, who will head the Technical Committee.
