Peruvian Rebel Sentenced to Life in Prison

The founder of Peru's Shining Path rebel group has been sentenced to life in prison following his conviction on terrorism charges.

Abimael Guzman, 71, led Shining Path during the 1980's and early 1990's. About 70,000 people died during the nearly 20 years of fighting between the rebels and government.

In 1992, Guzman was captured and convicted by a secret court, which sentenced him to life in prison.

However, that verdict was ruled unconstitutional, and a retrial was ordered.

Peru began the retrial of Guzman in September of last year.
