Rebels in Sri Lanka Attack Government Military Posts

update

Sri Lanka's government says Tamil rebels attacked several military posts Wednesday, amid increasing reports of violence in the island nation since peace talks broke down earlier this week.

Military officials have reported attacks in several locations in eastern and northeast Sri Lanka, but full details of the clashes are not yet available.

Sri Lanka's government said on Tuesday it will reopen a key highway linking the northern Jaffna peninsula with the rest of the island, but only if Tamil rebels stop their attacks.

An attempt to restart peace talks between the government and rebels collapsed in Geneva on Sunday after the government said it would not reopen the highway.

The negotiations broke up without setting a date for future talks.

In another development, the Sri Lankan navy says it destroyed a trawler off the northern coast late Tuesday. The vessel was suspected of transporting arms for Tamil rebels.

Rebels have been fighting since 1983 for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka's minority Tamils.
