Air Raids on Sri Lanka's Tamil Rebel Areas Continue for Second Day

update

Sri Lanka's military says air force jets have bombed the Tamil rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi, killing at least five people.

Thursday's air raid was the second in as many days after failed peace talks in Geneva between the rebels and the Sri Lankan government.

Earlier Thursday, officials said that clashes between government troops and Tamil rebels at a military post in the northern Jaffna peninsula left one soldier dead and two others injured.

An attempt to restart peace talks between the government and rebels collapsed in Geneva on Sunday after the government said it would not re-open the highway linking Jaffna with the rest of the island. Government officials later said they are willing to re-open the highway, but only if Tamil rebels stop their attacks.

The negotiations broke up without setting a date for future talks.
