NHL: Canadiens Shut Out Hurricanes

The Montreal Canadiens earned a 4-0 shutout win over the Carolina Hurricanes in National Hockey League action Thursday.

Michael Komisarek, Saku Koivu, Mike Johnson and Tomas Plekanec all scored for the Canadiens, while goalie Cristobal Huet made 31 saves against the defending NHL champs. The win avenged Montreal's loss to the Hurricanes in last season's Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series, when Carolina rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

In Thursday's other NHL games, the Buffalo Sabres beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 in a shootout. The New York Islanders upset the New Jersey Devils 5-2. The Tampa Bay Lightning snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Florida Panthers downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. The Minnesota Wild defeated the Vancouver Canucks 5-2. Goalie Manny Legace made 44 saves as the St. Louis Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1. The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 to win their fifth straight game, and the New York Rangers beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1.
