NHL: Maple Leafs Beat Bruins

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 6-4 Thursday in National Hockey League action.

The Maple Leafs stormed to a 5-1 lead by the second period, but Boston managed to pull within one goal when Wayne Primeau scored late in the third period. But Toronto's Alexei Ponikarovksy hit an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left to seal the victory for the Maple Leafs. Toronto has won six of their last seven games, while the Bruins have dropped three of their last four.

Elsewhere in the NHL, the winners were Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Columbus, Dallas, San Jose and Anaheim.

The Carolina Hurricanes shut out the Washington Capitals 5-0. Erik Cole achieved a hat trick for the Hurricanes, while goalie Cam Ward made 20 saves for his first career regular-season shutout. The New York Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1. Alexei Yashin scored two goals for the Islanders, while goalie Rick DiPietro made 32 saves.

The New Jersey Devils posted a 2-1 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks, who have lost eight straight games. The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-2. Dallas goalie Marty Turco made 13 saves as the Stars eked out a 1-0 shutout over the Phoenix Coyotes. The San Jose Sharks routed the Los Angeles Kings 7-3, while the Anaheim Ducks trounced the Vancouver Canucks 6-0 to remain undefeated in regulation in 16 games, an NHL record.
