Mine officials say a gas explosion at a coal mine in southern Poland has killed eight miners and trapped 15 others.
The blast occurred Tuesday 1,000 meters underground in the Halemba coal mine in the city of Ruda Slaska.
Authorities say the blast destroyed the mine's ventilation system. They say it is unclear how long the trapped miners can survive even with their emergency equipment.
Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski traveled to Ruda Slaska to help with rescue efforts.
The city is acquainted with coal mine tragedies. An accident at a separate coal pit in July killed four miners.
