Religious Author Calls for Greater Moral Leadership in US

A religious leader and political author has delivered the Democrats' weekly radio address, calling for new efforts to fight poverty and protect the environment.

The Reverend Jim Wallis, an evangelical Christian, said Saturday that he is not speaking for the Democratic Party. He said he is speaking as a person of faith who feels the hunger for change in America and sees the opportunity to apply moral values to the urgent problems the nation faces.

He said it is time to apply policies that make work more productive for low-income families and challenge the gap between rich and poor. He also said good stewardship of natural resources is a religious and moral question. He said both Democrats and Republicans must use greater moral leadership to transform the country.

Wallis is the author of a book published last year entitled "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It."
