A Spanish doctor who recently examined Cuban President Fidel Castro says the Communist leader does not have cancer.
Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido told reporters in Madrid on Tuesday that Mr. Castro is recovering from intestinal surgery and no more operations are planned.
He says Mr. Castro is in good physical and intellectual shape and wants to return to work.
The 80-year-old Cuban leader underwent surgery for an unspecified illness in July. At the time of the operation, Mr. Castro handed power to his brother, Raul.
Mr. Castro has not appeared in public since then and was last seen in a video broadcast in late October. The Cuban government says Mr. Castro's health is a state secret, fueling speculation about his condition.
The director of U.S. national intelligence, John Negroponte, recently said Mr. Castro is very ill and could die within months.
