Chinese Veteran Revolutionary Bo Yibo Dies at Age 98

update

China's official Xinhua news agency says one of the country's last revolutionary elders, Bo Yibo, has died at the age of 98.

The agency did not give any other details, but a Hong Kong television network, Phoenix Television, says Bo died late Monday at a Beijing hospital.

Born in 1908, Bo was considered one of China's "Eight Immortals" - leaders who participated in the 1949 Communist Revolution and remained hugely influential in Chinese politics though the 1980s and 90s.

Despite his senior status, Bo was imprisoned during the 1966 to 1976 Cultural Revolution, but was later rehabilitated.

Bo was an ally of fellow "immortal" Deng Xiaoping, who started China's economic reforms in the 1980s.

Bo was also the father of China's current commerce minister, Bo Xilai.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
