Kentucky Derby Winning Horse Barbaro Euthanized

Kentucky Derby winning horse Barbaro has been euthanized following complications from his breakdown during the Preakness Stakes race last May.

Owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro Monday morning when they made the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dean Richardson at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

Barbaro had endured a series of complications since shattering his right hind leg during the Preakness eight months ago, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof.

After demonstrating considerable discomfort over the weekend, Barbaro underwent surgery Saturday in a last-ditch effort to keep him comfortable enough to continue his recovery.

Richardson inserted two pins in the horse's right hind cannon bone to prevent the hoof from bearing any weight. But Richardson said Barbaro did not have a good night Sunday and he was euthanized on Monday morning.
