Ambassador: Philippine Hostages in Nigeria In 'Good Condition'

The Philippines' ambassador to Nigeria said Thursday 24 Philippine sailors abducted by Nigerian militants last month are "in good condition."

Ambassador Masaranga Umpa said he received the information a day earlier from a Delta state government negotiator, Ovie Omo-Agege. Umpa said the negotiator told him he personally saw the hostages on January 30 and that they were doing well.

The Philippine sailors were kidnapped January 20 from a cargo ship in the southwestern Nigerian city of Warri.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian oil worker who was abducted two days ago in the same area has been found dead. The head of an oil workers' union announced the worker's death Thursday without giving any details.

Militant groups carry out frequent kidnappings and attacks on oil facilities in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region. The militants are demanding the government give more oil revenue to impoverished local communities.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
