Belarusian Police Confiscate Opposition Flyers

Belarusian police have raided an apartment in Minsk, confiscating as many as 200,000 opposition leaflets calling for a demonstration marking the country's independence day.

The leaflet called on citizens to gather in a central square to commemorate the March 25, 1918 Belarusian declaration of independence from Russia.

The opposition Charter97 website says activist Uladzimir Labkovich voiced outrage at the confiscation, saying it shows that democratic activists are under 24-hour a day police surveillance in the country.

Labkovich said the confiscation also shows the government of President Alexander Lukashenko seeks to deprive the public of an opportunity to join a peaceful demonstration.

Belarusian activists declared their country's independence in 1918, but Soviet Red Army troops crushed their movement the following year.
