Federer, Nadal Reach Quarterfinals of Monte Carlo Masters Tennis Tournament

World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland and number two Rafael Nadal of Spain have reached the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters tournament in Monaco.

Federer needed only 64 minutes to defeat South Korean Lee Hyung-taik in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. He will next meet clay-court specialist David Ferrer of Spain, who was a straight-sets winner over Serbian Novak Djokovic, 7-5, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Nadal extended his winning streak on clay courts to 64 matches. He scored 21 consecutive points in the second set of his 6-1, 6-1 rout of Kristof Vliegen of Belgium.

Nadal moves on to play German qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber who beat Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez in three close sets, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.

In other third round results Thursday, 10th seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic rallied from a first set loss to knock off fifth seed Tommy Robredo of Spain, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Max Mirnyi of Belarus, 7-6, 6-2.

Other winners included 16th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain and Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
