Sources among Zimbabwean non-governmental organizations said officials within the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare denied taking steps toward the deregistration of NGOs as announced recently by Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu.
Ministry directorate officials said in a meeting with NGO representatives that they had no knowledge of any such initiative, according to National Association of Non-Governmental Organizations Program Director Bob Muchabayiwa.
But civic organization leaders remain wary of Harare's intentions, Muchabayiwa told reporter Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe.
