Burma Reports Polio Outbreak Near Bangladesh Border

Officials in Burma have reported a new outbreak of polio near the country's western border with Bangladesh.

Reports Wednesday said the outbreak of the potentially crippling disease occurred in Rakhine state. Reuters news agency cites an health ministry official as saying two children were infected.

The government says a vaccination program in the province will begin next week.

Burma had declared itself free of polio in 2000. But the virus was detected in the East Asian country last year. Polio also continues to infect people in parts of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
