Advisor To Zimbabwe Opposition Faction Leader Seeks Bail


An advisor to Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change President Morgan Tsvangirai, made an appearance before the High Court Tuesday, seeking release on bail.

Ian Makone, who has been in police custody since the end of March, and 30 other MDC members, face various charges under the Criminal Codification Act including recruiting people to train in South Africa to engage in acts of sabotage against the Zimbabwean government.

His co-accused are expected to appear in court in batches during the course of this week. Among the accused are Glen View Member of Parliament Paul Madzore, his young brother Solomon, deputy organizing secretary Morgan Komichi, Dennis Murira, Philipp Mabika and Theresa Makone.

One of their lawyers, Andrew Makoni, told reporter Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe, that a decision is expected early next week.
