The New Jersey Nets avoided elimination from the National Basketball Association playoffs with an 82-72 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday.
Jason Kidd scored 20 points for the Nets, who built a 22-point lead over Cleveland in the third quarter. The big lead was crucial as New Jersey scored only six points in the final quarter, while holding the Cavaliers to just 13 points. LeBron James led the Cavaliers with 20 points.
Cleveland now leads the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-2. Game six moves to New Jersey Friday.
In the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Phoenix Suns 88-85. Manu Ginobili scored 26 points to lead the Spurs, while teammate Tim Duncan scored 21 and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Phoenix nearly pulled off the victory despite missing star players Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw. The NBA suspended both players for leaving the bench area after San Antonio's Robert Horry committed a flagrant foul on teammate Steve Nash towards the end of their game four win Monday.
Wednesday's win gives the Spurs a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series, which moves back to San Antonio Friday for game six.
