Baseball's Phillies Suffer 10,000th Loss

update

Major League Baseball fans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania have endured thousands of losses by the Phillies. With a 10-2 rout by the visiting St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, the Phillies have the dubious honor of being the first professional sports team to have lost 10,000 games.

Through most of the game, Philadelphia fans in the sellout crowd of 44,872 jeered their team's poor pitching and hitting. By the ninth inning, fans stood and cheered the inevitable milestone.

The franchise, born in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers and later called the Blue Jays in the mid-1940s, also has 8,810 wins and one World Series championship (1980) in 125 years. But Philadelphia has 14 seasons with more than 100 losses each, and one with 23 straight defeats.
