Sarkozy to Return to France for Archbishop's Funeral

update

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will cut his U.S. vacation short to attend the funeral of the former archbishop of Paris.

The president's office confirmed Thursday that Mr. Sarkozy will pay his respects to the late Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Friday.

Mr. Sarkozy and his family have been vacationing in the northeastern U.S. state of New Hampshire.

The French leader is to return to the United States after the funeral to meet U.S. President George W. Bush Saturday at the Bush family home in the state of Maine.

Lustiger died Sunday at the age of 80. He was archbishop of Paris from 1981 to 2005.

Lustiger converted from Judaism to Catholicism at age 14, and spent his life promoting greater understanding between Catholics and Jews.
