US Stocks Fall in Wednesday's Trading


U.S. stock market indexes fell in Wednesday's trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than one percent or 168 points to finish the day at 12,861. The S&P 500 lost all of its gains for the year, falling 1.4 percent for the day or 20 points to close at 1,407. The NASDAQ lost more than 1.5 percent, 40 points, to close at 2,459.

European stock markets were mixed at the close of trading. London's Financial Times 100 index lost more than half a percent or 34 points to end at 6,109. The CAC-40 in Paris fell two-thirds of a percent (36 points) to hit 5,443, while the DAX in Frankfurt gained a third of a percent (21 points) to finish the day at 7,446.

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index fell more than two percent (369 points) to end at 16,476. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng fell nearly three percent, 632 points, to finish the day at 21,376.

The price of gold fell 58 cents to trade at $668.62 an ounce.

The dollar was down against the yen but gained value compared to the euro.
