Sierra Leone Presidential Race Headed to Runoff

Sierra Leone is headed for a presidential run-off election, after no candidate captured a majority in first-round voting last week.

New results released Monday showed Ernest Koroma of the All People's Congress Party leading with 44 percent of the vote. Vice President Solomon Berewa from the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party is second with 38 percent.

The latest results from Sierra Leone's electoral commission cover 93 percent of all polling stations.

The third-place finisher, Charles Margai, said today that he would support Koroma in the run-off vote.

A VOA reporter in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Kelvin Lewis, reports that the run-off will be held in two weeks.
