Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie has set a new world record for the marathon.

Running in the Berlin Marathon in the German capital Sunday the 34-year-old Gebrselassie had near ideal conditions for his challenge.

His winning time was two hours, four minutes and 26 seconds - 29 seconds faster than the previous record set by Kenya's Paul Tergat on the same Berlin course in 2003.
