Aussies Fall, Germans Tie in Malaysia Field Hockey

Spain has handed Olympic champion Australia its second loss, 3-2, while world champion Germany remained unbeaten at the Champions Trophy men's field hockey tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Santi Freixa led the Spaniards with two goals, in the 34th and 54th minutes. Eduard Tubau opened the scoring the 11th minute. Australia scored in 42nd and 68th minutes. The Aussies are now in third place in the tournament standings with nine points. Only the top two teams after round-robin play qualify for the final.

Meanwhile, Germany remained undefeated thanks to a 3-3 draw with the Netherlands. Rob Reckers, Taeke Taekema and Rogier Hofman scored for the Dutch. Florian Keller had two goals for the Germans who are in first place in the tournament standings with 13 points.

South Korea is second in the event after beating host country Malaysia, 3-2 Wednesday. Pakistan suffered a shock defeat to Britain, 4-1. A thunderstorm delayed the match midway through the second half with Britain ahead, 3-0. Play resumed after more than an hour, but Pakistan could not find any offense. Pakistan only has four points while Britain has six with only two matches left in the round-robin portion.
