Police in Burundi say a French aid worker has been killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting attack east of the capital, Bujumbura.
Police say the two French women worked for the aid group Action Against Hunger. They say three aid workers were traveling in a marked company car with two other people in the Ruyigi region late Monday when an unidentified gunman fired at the vehicle.
They say one of the aid workers died of her wounds on the way to the hospital.
Burundi officials say the vehicle was not robbed and the reason for the attack is not clear.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the shooting in a statement Tuesday. He called on authorities in Burundi to do everything possible to determine who is responsible for the attack.
