Former world No. 1 women's tennis player Lindsay Davenport of the United States has started her new year by winning the ASB Classic hard court tennis tournament in New Zealand.
Davenport, who took most of last year off to have her first child, defeated French player Aravane Rezai in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The win is Davenport's third title in four events since coming back from the birth of her son Jagger. The American also won tournaments in Bali, Indonesia and in Quebec City, Canada last year. Davenport made the semifinals of a tournament in Beijing.
The Auckland win also moves Davenport into eighth place on the all-time list of WTA tournament winners with 54 victories. The American was playing in Auckland for the first time and does not plan to play any more tournaments before the Australian Open begins January 14th.
