Ackermann Takes WC Nordic Combined Race

Germany's Ronny Ackermann has won a World Cup Nordic combined event in Val di Fiemme, Italy, and strengthened his overall lead.

Ackermann finished second in the ski jumping portion and completed the cross-country ski portion with a total time of 41:52.2.

American Bill Demong finished second, 34.1 seconds back. Sebastian Haseney of Germany was third, 0.20 seconds of one second behind Demong.

Ackermann's win was his third this season. He leads the overall World Cup standings with 626 points. Demong is second with 557 points while Bjoern Kircheisen of Germany, who did not compete Saturday, is third with 514 points.

Nordic combined features two ski jumps and cross country skiing. The ski jumping winner starts first in the 15-kilometer race. Athletes' ski placings are factored into their start time in the skiing and the first skier across the finish line wins.
