1 Soldier, 2 Rebels Killed in Clashes in Southeastern Turkey

update

Officials in Turkey say two Kurdish rebels and one Turkish soldier have been killed in clashes in southeastern Turkey.

The sources say two other soldiers were wounded in Tuesday's fighting near the town of Genc in Bingol province.

Turkey has stepped up military operations against rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Worker's Party, or PKK, inside Turkey and in northern Iraq this year.

Also Tuesday, the Turkish military provided more information about two days of cross-border bombings last week. A military statement said 43 fighter jets pounded PKK rebel positions in northern Iraq on Friday and Saturday. The military did not provide casualty figures.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast for nearly 25 years. The violence has killed more than 30,000 people.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
