The Italian women twice came back from a game down Wednesday to beat China 3-2 (22-25, 29-27, 20-25, 25-20, 15-9). Chinese coach Chen Zhonghe said his team made too many errors and did not play as well as the Italians.
Earlier in the day, world silver medallists Brazil defeated the United States 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) to open the six-team round robin competition.
In the late match, Cuba rallied after losing the first game to beat host-Japan, 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19).
