A Yemeni security official said Osama bin Laden's former driver has arrived in Yemen, following his release from the U.S. military detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The official said Salim Hamdan was transferred to Yemeni authorities after his arrival Wednesday in the capital, Sanaa, and will be taken to a prison.
The U.S. Defense Department said Tuesday Hamdan would be transferred to his home country, Yemen, to serve the last few weeks of his prison sentence for providing material support to terrorism.
In August, a U.S. military jury sentenced Hamdan to five-and-a-half years in prison, after clearing him of a more serious charge that he conspired with al-Qaida to attack the United States. Considering time already served, Hamdan is eligible for release in a month.
Prosecutors had asked the jury to sentence Hamdan to 30 years in prison, arguing he delivered weapons and helped protect bin Laden. But Hamdan told the six-member panel he was just a low-level worker who was not aware of al-Qaida's activities.
