Kyrgyzstan Shuts Down BBC, RFE/RL Broadcasts

Kyrgyzstan's state-run broadcaster said it has eliminated local BBC and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty programs from its airwaves.

The head of the Kyrgyz National Television Corporation, Melis Eshimkanov, said Friday that he had suspended BBC broadcasts because of unspecified technical reasons.

The Kyrgyz broadcaster recently took the Krygyz program of U.S.-funded Radio Liberty off the air, citing shortcomings in contractual obligations.

Opposition leaders have sharply criticized Kyrgyzstan's government for what they say is a systematic crackdown on media freedoms.
