The Pittsburgh Pirates have scored seven runs in the bottom of the 9th inning after the first two batters flew out, beating the Houston Astros 9-8 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Brian Giles ended the game with a grand slam to overcome three home runs by Houston's Vinny Castilla, who nearly hit a fourth. The Astros overcame the loss to crush the Pirates 12-3 in the late game.

In another National League contest Saturday, the New York Mets homered off Turk Wendell in the bottom of the ninth to beat Philadelphia 4-3 just one day after trading away the ace relief pitcher to the Phillies.

Sammy Sosa homered for the host Chicago Cubs while Mark McGwire hit one out for the Cardinals in a 7-4 Saint Louis' victory. The Los Angeles Dodgers scored all of their 10 runs by the third inning to beat the visiting Colorado Rockies 10-6. Ken Caminiti homered twice to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 10-5 win over the Expos in Montreal.

In the other National League games Saturday, Dmitri Young hit a grand slam for Cincinnati in the Reds' 5-0 shut down of the visiting Florida Marlins. Phil Nevin hit a bases-loaded homer along with a solo shot to lift the San Diego Padres to a 6-2 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee. San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds failed to hit a home run, but his Giants still clubbed the host Arizona Diamondbacks 11-4.

In the American League, Roger Clemens became Major League Baseball's first pitcher to win 15 games this season as his New York Yankees trounced the Blue Jays 12-1 in Toronto. Clemens improved to 15 wins against just one loss while winning his 11th straight decision.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays scored four times in the top of the 10th inning to beat Texas 7-4 after the Rangers tied the game with two runs in the 9th.

The Cleveland Indians handed the host Detroit Tigers their seventh straight defeat with a 6-4 decision in the first game of a doubleheader. The Tigers later ended the streak by doubling the Indians 4-2. The baseball-best Seattle Mariners beat the visiting Minnesota Twins 5-1. The Kansas City Royals scored six runs in the top of the 7th to defeat the Oakland Athletics 9-3.

In the other American League games Saturday, the Chicago White Sox downed the Red Sox 3-1 in Boston. The Anaheim Angels scored four times in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4.
