Burkina Faso's Football Federation Slams National Team - 2001-08-02

Burkina Faso's Football Federation (FBF) has slammed the national team for refusing to play in a World Cup qualifier in a dispute over bonuses. The federation also decided not to renew the contracts of senior coaches, Sidiki Diarra and his assistant Joseph Kabore, when they expire at the end of October.

Last month, the Burkina Faso team refused to board a plane to play a road match at Zimbabwe because bonuses from a previous game against South Africa had not been paid. A second string team was sent as a substitute to Harare, where Burkina lost 1-0 on July 15.

A statement issued by the federation on Wednesday condemned the defection of the players selected, adding that they had failed in their duty to defend the national colors.

Burkina Faso was in Group-five of African zone World Cup qualifying. South Africa finished atop the group to book a place at next year's World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.
