Tennis: Andy Roddick Wins Legg Mason - 2001-08-20

American teenager Andy Roddick has won his third ATP men's tennis title, capturing the Legg Mason Classic in Washington. The victory over Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands provided Roddick a key warm-up for the U.S. Open later this month.

After a 35-minute rain delay in the second set, 18-year-old American Andy Roddick finished off Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to claim his third title of the year.

Roddick blasted serves past Schalken, including nine aces, in the first-ever meeting between the two players.

Schalken says the teenager's big serves made the difference. "He played a very good match. He aced me all the time when he needed to. And that is his big effort," said the Dutch player.

Roddick at times lost control of his power and missed the baseline. But he focused after a miss to come back and string together crucial points.

Schalken began to rally in the second set, before the rain forced the players inside. The break allowed Roddick to regroup, while Schalken was unable to pick up his rally. The victory gives Roddick a big boost leading to the final grand slam event of the year, the U.S. Open in New York later this month.
