Hewitt Jumps to 3rd Place in ATP Champions Race - 2001-09-10


Lleyton Hewitt has jumped into third place in the ATP Champions Race after beating American Pete Sampras in straight sets at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York on Sunday.

The Australian's first Grand Slam title vaulted him into third place with 635 points, behind leader Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil (755) and American Andre Agassi (683). Sampras also benefited from making it to the final, climbing 12 spots to seventh.

Australia's Pat Rafter is fourth, followed by Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov in sixth place. Sampras is seventh, with Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean, Tim Henman of Britain and Roger Federer of Switzerland rounding out the top-10.

Other significant movement among the top players included Marat Safin of Russia, who jumped 11 places to 14th after reaching the semifinals at Flushing Meadows. Thomas Johansson moved from 21st to 17th following his fourth-round appearance in New York.
