Death Toll Keeps Climbing at WTC - 2001-09-20

The number of people missing in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has risen by almost 1,000.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani made the grim announcement at a late afternoon meeting with reporters. "We now are at 6,333 reported missing," he said. "The main reason for that is that we are now getting numbers from foreign nationals. For example, there were about 250 British nationals alone."

The new number of missing is almost 1,000 more than had been previously reported. Mayor Giuliani says the number may fluctuate up or down because there could be some duplications.

Although the operations at the Trade Center are still officially being labeled as a "search and rescue" mission, officials say the chances that anyone will be found alive are extremely remote.
