Russia has qualified for the 2002 women's field hockey World Cup by defeating Lithuania to secure the last available semifinal berth at the qualifying tournament.
Needing a win on Thursday to finish first in Pool-B, the Russians edged Lithuania 2-1. Lithuania was also competing for the last berth, but would have needed to beat Russia by 12 goals to advance.
The Russians were able to cruise through the match, after taking the 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke six minutes into the game. They went up 2-0, before Lithuania broke the shut out in the 66th minute.
Russia will play Ukraine in an all-east European semifinal on Saturday while England, the Pool-A winners, will play Pool-B runner-up Japan.
