Afghan Opposition Denies US Agents in Its Territory - 2001-09-30

The Afghan opposition, the Northern Alliance, says there are no U.S. operatives on the ground in the regions of Afghanistan which it controls.

Foreign Minister of the Northern Alliance Dr. Abdullah denied that there were any U.S. operatives here in the north of the country. He was responding to Arab TV reports that five American soldiers from a special forces troop had been taken prisoner in Afghanistan.

The Taleban also denied the report Saturday, saying they had taken no American prisoners. Dr. Abdullah also warned of a humanitarian crisis, saying refugees are now appearing on a daily basis here in Northern Alliance-held territory.

The U.N. has resumed its first shipment of food since the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11. Food and medicine has been sent across the border from Pakistan. It will be transferred from trucks to waiting donkeys for distribution across the mountain paths.
