Dow Jones Cuts 36 Editorial Jobs - 2001-11-08

Media company Dow Jones will be merging the news operations of its Asian Wall Street Journal and the weekly Far Eastern Economic Review, cutting 36 editorial jobs or about a quarter of total newsroom staff.

The decision comes after the global economic slowdown caused sharp declines in the advertising revenue of the Wall Street Journal and its international editions. Under the plan, reporters of both publications will be working in the same offices, but Dow Jones officials said this would not affect the style of the two publications.

Dow Jones reported a sharp fall in third-quarter earnings, driven mainly by the negative performance of overseas operations.
