Sri Lankan Women's Olympic Sprinter May Quit Following Alleged Assault - 2001-12-21

Jayasinghe says she was pushed against a wall, punched and verbally abused while training at the Sports Ministry grounds in Colombo on Wednesday. The 26-year-old sprinter won a bronze medal in the 200-meter event at the Olympic Games in Sydney last year, ending Sri Lanka's 50-year medal drought.

A complaint has been lodged about Wednesday's alleged incident at the Cinnamon Gardens police station and investigations have already begun. Sports Minister Johnston Fernando says he condemns the incident and says he has taken steps to allow Jayasinghe to safely resume training. Jayasinghe is no stranger to controversy. She left Sri Lanka for Los Angeles in 1997 after accusing former Sports Minister SB Dissanayake of sexual harassment. Jayasinghe also tested positive for an anabolic steroid but was later cleared by the International Amateur Athletic Federation in 1999.
